Niger has officially designated Hausa as its national language, demoting French to a mere working language, in a sweeping move to shed colonial influence and assert cultural sovereignty. The language shift is part of Niger’s new Refoundation Charter, which also cements General Tiani’s rule for a 60-month transition period. Niger joins Mali and Burkina Faso in distancing from France, having quit the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie and forming the Alliance of Sahel States. Similar moves are underway across West Africa and in Algeria, where governments are replacing French with local or English languages in education, governance, and law, marking a regional push to rewrite their post-colonial narrative. Watch for more.

  1. The foolish policies of African governments is being shown up by Ibraham Traore, and they would do well to follow suit. From one of the countries which was classified amongst the poorest we can see with strategic planning and with the people behind you……..great things can be achieved. We must stop being the laughing stock of the world and control our birthright for the benefit of our people.

  4. I’m so upset why it took us so long to do this!! These stupid previous leaders did nothing but be a dog to the whites but I’m glad it’s done now, better late than never I guess

  5. But many African countries still have Arabic as their official language. Why are they OK with Arab colonization and cultural interference but not Western one????? Pathetic hypocrisy.

  6. Good move. This is the way it's supposed to be. Your African language should always be the official national language on your land. Not the colonizer's language. Do not ever put the colonizer's language over you or above you and be the dominant language. No. Black African language should be the official DOMINANT language in all black African countries. Then i hope Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger would also develop  a non-colonial educational system in their countries that will DECOLONIZE  their people and their minds. So, the next generation parents would start naming and given their children African names. Additionally, i  hope these countries also, rename the streets from the colonizer oppressor France names to the names of heroes of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. Thus, completely abolish and abandon the colonizer's idealism and culture or influence. Do not promote it. It's useless.

  12. It is good to drop it as a national language, but not as a trade or business language, like English or Spanish, languages spoken through out many nations.
By example if you learn Spanish you can visit over 23 countries and some other regions where spanish is spoken.if you learn english you can go to many places..and so on. But i get the feeling, of making your own languages national.
So how many languages do they speak on the sahel nations ???
