Somalia’s National Communications Authority has officially licensed Starlink to provide satellite internet services across the country, a move that could significantly expand access to remote regions. Somalia now joins 18 other African countries with Starlink service. Starlink continues to eye expansion in Africa, the continent with the lowest internet penetration rate globally. But the company has faced regulatory roadblocks, including in South Africa, where SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was born. Starlink’s greenlight in Somalia comes against a broader political backdrop.
