Just days before she was fired by President Trump, Carla Hayden – the first woman and the first African American to serve as the librarian of Congress – warned about the risk of losing important parts of U.S. history. Hayden and Noelle Trent, the head of Boston’s Museum of African American History, spoke with GBH News Rooted Host Paris Alston about their efforts to preserve Black history.

Dr. Carla Hayden, who served as the 14th Librarian of Congress, is a distinguished and highly respected figure in the library and information science field. Appointed by President Barack Obama in 2016, she was the first woman and the first African American to hold the position. Her career prior to the Library of Congress included serving as CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore and as President of the American Library Association. Trump is now trying to replace her with a less qualified WM. I hope she fights to keep her position. We need to preserve history and protect the collections.
I love these black women to the moon! I share the same goals and endeavor to open my own museum as well! Omg I’m so excited, because these mix ups often lead to our come ups and I’m inspired. I keep hearing this comment of we’re going to lose the history on FBA “BLACK AMERICAN” but I don’t hear a solution on how we can avoid this from happening. The best solution is to build our own library. to houses our own history, but no one is saying this when the black museum in DC was being built. They requested donations to have it built why not do the same thing to build a black library not owned by the US government, but owned by Black people created by us for us paid for by us ran by us. We need to bring awareness and have a solution at the same time please somebody if you’re going to speak on this have a solution
