I grew up a white kid in a town that was originally in Mexico. As a kid, I felt threatened walking to school and hearing the Mexican kids walking to school behind me speaking Spanish. But, over time I got used to them. In high school, there was a Mexican guy who sometimes hung out with us white guys. One day, when he wasn’t with us, someone said, “Jorge is a really nice guy,” to which another guy said, “Yeah, too bad he’s a Mexican!” At that moment I had a realization: I actually like Mexicans better than I like white people. They aren’t as arrogant. So, when I see this administration deporting Latinos and welcoming the Boers to come, I am really ambivalent. If a Boer family moved next door, would I welcome them? Or go through this process of change again? Or, will the current administration pass a law saying it’s punishable by law to dislike them? In which case, of course, I would comply with the law. Lol.
