Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Traore: What’s True? What’s False? The Cult Surrounding the Young Leader

Why has Burkina Faso’s military leader, CAPTAIN IBRAHIM TRAORE garnered such adulation online? That’s a question for renowned investigative journalist DAVID HUNDEYIN who replies that the young leader, he’s 37, symbolises a break from the status quo and offers hope to a youthful continent whose people yearn for a hero.
Who, or what, is behind the social media tsunami that surrounds CAPTAIN TRAORE? We ponder whether the multitude of social media posts extolling his often other-worldly virtues are true or fake and what effect they have. Could they actually undermine TRAORE?
David suggests the Burkinabe authorities would do well to take a firmer control of their own narrative.,
We wonder why we’ve heard so few Burkinabe voices on the matter – most of the commentary is coming from outsiders, very few of whom have actually been to Burkina Faso.
Impressive claims are being made about the rule of CAPTAIN TRAORE, like ending all taxation and undertaking extensive road building. But what about the security situation? Reports suggest that government control extends to just a third of the country. The rest, reports say, is being run by various Islamist groups with many people displaced from their villages.

What is needed, says Patrick, is robust reporting by independent journalists from inside Burkina Faso to establish the facts. David says objectivity in journalism does not exist – everyone has an interest, a bias.

And Donu raises the inherent dangers of a cult of personality.
David says there are limited benefits from democratic systems of government in Africa – economic freedom is what counts most.

  1. If you are a good journalist who knows how to do your jobs properly you should have gone to the source to find out the true information. Why are you seating down in doubt? Go to Bokina Faso!!!. A journalist taking money just to tell lies that is criminal and very irresponsible behavior.

  2. I think he is intelligent, but David has a blind spot here. We don't want military coups or authoritarianism, because it is potentially dangerous. There are no checks and balances. David is essentially hoping for a benevolent authoritarian, but it is rare, although I agree that false democracy hasn't worked either. It is important to have free journalism! How can he so casually brush that aside? And while China has done well, economically, are their workers happy? I don't know. I guess David is saying "everybody else does this. who cares?". He has left his idealism behind. We can have economic freedom and transparency at the same time.

  3. Go into Burkina Faso and interview everyone you see on the street and you’d see that the entire population supports Traore, Wode Maya went in and showed the live sentiments of Burkinabes , people sleeping on the streets just to protect their young leader, in every country there are those who would always feel bad about a leader especially when his dispensation affects their personal or global interests, Wode Maya is professional enough for y’all to go to his page and see live footages of Burkina Faso’s people and their feelings, democracy has almost destroyed Africa, insecurity has nothing to do with military rule, once the west dislikes a leader they can also influence insecurity, history has shown us that even in Nigeria, just like David said, why are people more concerned about Traore that is building a country that has been rotting for decades while the likes of Paul Biya and Museveni rule in peace with ruthless carelessness about their citizens?

  4. Smells like some sort of a psyops to me.
On another note David Hundeyin’s astute political observations and analysis are spot on. As a 70 year old white male living in Australia and watching world events I have come to understand how much I have been propagandised for much Of my life.

  5. ❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂
Traoré is not putting any penny in his 📺media spread❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  6. The Brits have always been at the centre of counter revolution, starting with their war against the Bolshevik revolutions. But they refuse to acknowledge Sankara and the need for revolutions to protect themselves.

  7. Traoure it may not be perfect for some people but, for sure its a blesed for we majority of african. Any person agaist Ibrahim Is an enemy and trator of we africans suffering in poverty. Please open your eyes

  9. Wode Maya made a whole youtube video (with over 4 million views) interviewing Burkinabé people IN BURKINA FASO about what is happening in their country and how they feel about Traoré,,, and the video was posted even before this episode. Just go and check it out, these interviewers really need to get properly informed. It's a shame that the most viewed episode of this podcast shows a very uncritical conversation (not David) about Africa here & now…

  10. I will not support an oppressive government and I will not support a government that exploit the people economically. What is the value of freedom to a hungry man? Is what we have in Nigeria,Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea etc a democracy with freedom of speech?
