The Pentagon is looking to rename several ships named after women, Black people, or gay people in an effort to “restore warrior culture”. One of the ships they seek to rename is the USNS Harriet Tubman. This is the second ship named after the General, the first being during World War 2. She was the first woman to lead a US military assault. In 1863, she led the 54th Massachusetts Regime in a daring raid that freed over 700 slaves. The other ships are the Harvey Milk, Cesar Chavez, Lucy Stone, and Thurgood Marshall. It’s being reported by Military.com that Hegseth explicitly ordered Harvey Milk’s ship to be renamed during Pride month on purpose. Harvey Milk was essentially kicked out of the military for being gay while he was serving in the Korean war. The reason all of these oil vessels are named after civil rights icons is because it’s part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to recognize that Americans of all colors, creeds, and orientations have fought and died for the country. It also allowed the Pentagon to finally ditch names connected to the confederacy. Legendary Pentagon reporter Barbara Starr reacted to the news saying “This is a bad day for the US Navy. Where on earth is the heritage of a force that has long honored, fought, and fallen for all Americans. What is the war-fighting reason for this?” Others are asking “does the US military defend all Americans or just some of them?” It’s not immediately clear what the new name for Milk or Tubman’s ships will be.

I mean this comes after the fact that they took down Medal of Honor citations from the DOD website from recipients who were black, some of the URL’s being changed to refer to them being “DEI” in nature.
The message is clear. If you’re not a cishet white man, you’re not welcome in the US military, you will not be remembered for your efforts- even if they’re at the risk of your life above and beyond the call of duty.
