HORN LAKE, Miss. – The city of Horn Lake elected its first Black mayor.
Commissioner Jimmy Stokes narrowly defeated Republican Danny Klein in the June 3 election, marking a Democratic victory in every position during the citywide election.
Stokes’ campaign lead called the all-Democratic ticket a “stunning shift of political momentum,” giving Democrats six of the eight alderman seats in Horn Lake.
“This groundbreaking victory marks a transformative step forward for the
community and sets the stage for a bold new chapter in Horn Lake’s leadership,” Stokes’ team said.
Stokes ran for mayor as the City Planning Commissioner for Ward 5. Along with his newly acquired title of mayor, Stokes is the minister of Northeast Side Church of Christ in Bartlett and the CEO and director of Redemption 180, a nonprofit based in Bartlett that focuses on restoring youth and families.
Stokes’ team said the mayor will focus on strengthening infrastructure, enhancing public safety, supporting small businesses, and revitalizing parks and community service spaces.
I’m deeply honored and humbled to be elected as your next Mayor,” said Stokes in a public statement. “To my family, friends, campaign team, and every supporter who believed in this vision from day one, thank you from the bottom of my heart. To the people of Horn Lake: I’m ready to get to work and begin
implementing the goals we set throughout this campaign, promoting transparency, uplifting our youth, embracing diversity, and building a better Horn Lake for all.”
