One of the biggest beef producers in South Africa, Karan Beef has confirmed a case of foot and mouth disease outbreak at their Heidelberg facility in Gauteng.
An immediate suspension of cattle intake and exportation of beef has been put in place as a measure to curb the spread of this highly contagious disease.
To unpack what this will mean to red meat production and our country’s economy, we are joined by Senior Feedlot Veterinarian at Karan Beef, Dr. Dirk Verwoerd, and Thabile Nkunjana Senior Agricultural Economist for Trade Research at the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC).

If you want traceability agenda you have to up the price for calves to the farmers. The weaner price is what it was in 2017. If you carry on with this you wont have any surplies left. If you dont up the weaner price farmers wont do traceability.
