Marines and additional National Guard troops were headed to Los Angeles on Tuesday, June 10, in a move ordered by President Donald Trump in response to protests sparked by immigration raids across the city on June 6 — without notifying local law enforcement. The deployment is proceeding despite strong opposition from California Gov. Gavin Newsom and local officials.
According to the governor’s office, the Department of Homeland Security reported that they arrested 44 individuals on June 6, two of whom are believed to be minors. Five of those arrested reportedly had a criminal history.
“Donald Trump is creating fear and terror by failing to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and overstepping his authority. This is a manufactured crisis to allow him to take over a state militia, damaging the very foundation of our republic,” Newsom said in a statement.
“Every governor, red or blue, should reject this outrageous overreach. This is beyond incompetence — this is him intentionally causing chaos, terrorizing communities, and endangering the principles of our great democracy. It is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism. We will not let this stand.”
The decision to sue Trump came as the president posted on his own platform, Truth Social, accusing the demonstrations of being violent and Newsom being unable to control the city. Newsom claimed via X that Trump’s deployment of the National Guard without his approval exacerbated the demonstrations on the ground. Under pressure from lawmakers, during a congressional hearing on Tuesday Pentagon officials disclosed that the cost of the deployment will total $134 million—money pulled from military operations and maintenance funds.
Demonstrations erupted across Southern California cities including Paramount and parts of neighboring Compton and downtown Los Angeles.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the deployment.
“President Trump has trampled on our state’s sovereignty,” Bonta said during a press conference.
National Guard convoys were seen traveling through the Inland Empire toward Los Angeles on Sunday.
During a Tuesday briefing, Mayor Karen Bass criticized the federal response, calling it an unnecessary show of force.
“It’s a sense of intimidation and fear that is just so unnecessary and so corrosive to our city,” she said, adding that she intends to call the president and ask him to halt the raids.
Bass also dismissed Trump’s claim that the National Guard had protected the city during earlier unrest.
“They didn’t even arrive until Sunday,” she said. “They’re not doing crowd control—they’re stationed at the federal building. I don’t know how he could say the National Guard saved the day. It was our local law enforcement that stepped up.”
