MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – Multiple black bear sightings have been reported in downtown Morgantown Monday.
West Virginia University sent out a community notice Monday following reports of a black bear near the downtown campus.
Officials say at least one bear was reported near the PRT’s Maintenance Facility on 8th Street Monday.
A video surveillance image of the bear is being circulated.
Officers responded to the area. However, they were unable to locate the bear.
A separate bear sighting has been reported to the Morgantown Police Department.
Police say an adult female black bear and two of her cubs have been spotted near Beechurst Avenue and the Core Arborteum area.
As of now, it is unclear if these are the same bears.
If you encounter a bear, residents should call 911, officials say. Although bear attacks are rare, the Division of Natural Resources offers the following safety tips:
• If you see a bear before it notices you, stand still and don’t approach the bear. Then move away quietly in the opposite direction.
• If you encounter a bear that’s aware of you, don’t run. Running may trigger a chase response. Back away slowly in the opposite direction and wait for the bear to leave.
• Keep dogs leashed. Letting dogs chase or bark at bears is asking for trouble; don’t force a bear to defend itself.
• Leave earbuds at home. Cyclists and joggers traveling quickly and quietly can easily surprise bears. Be aware of your surroundings and make noise periodically.
