Togo protests erupt over president’s extended rule

Police in the West African nation of Togo have used tear gas and batons to break up anti-government protests in the capital, Lome. Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbé following a recent constitutional reform that could allow him to remain in power indefinitely. The opposition has described the move as a “constitutional coup,” accusing the government of undermining democracy.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Lome.

African is rising and the backward way of governance has no place in our motherland.

  2. Why are they protesting? Because he changed the constitution ti stay for life? But his family has been doing this all their lives anyway. Why didnt these clowns protest 50 years ago?
