A black bear was spotted roaming near Galena in northwestern Illinois in recent weeks, the state’s Department of Natural Resources said Friday.
According to the IDNR, a black bear was seen by multiple landowners near Mississippi Palisades State Park and private homes south and east of Galena, a community of around 3,000 residents in Jo Daviess County, approximately 170 miles northwest of Chicago.
While a bear’s presence shouldn’t necessarily be perceived as a threat to human safety, residents should remember bears are wild animals and to treat them as such, according to the state agency.
The IDNR urges residents to check their property for food sources that may attract bears, including bird feeders, grills, garbage cans and dog food. Once a bear finds a food source, it will likely return, officials said. Those who happen to encounter the bear should give it sufficient space – and back away slowly and quietly.
The INDR recommends individuals adhere to the following “Bear Wise” basics to help prevent conflicts:
- Never feed or approach bears.
- Secure food, garbage, and recycling.
- Remove bird feeders where bears are active.
- Avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
- Thoroughly clean and store grills and smokers after each use.
- Alert neighbors to bear activity.
Those who spot a bear in Illinois are encouraged to report it to the IDNR here.
