Are the African Union and ECOWAS losing relevance in a changing world? | DW News

The current situation in Sudan, coups in the Sahel, and the breakaway of three West African nations raise questions about the strength of the AU and ECOWAS. Are these continental and regional bodies still relevant or just symbolic?

  1. Biggest problem with a lot of the African countries is corruption those in empower take all the wealth and get kickbacks from other countries like the US and European countries in China while the people of the countries suffer or left defend for themselves🤷🏼‍♂️😔💯

  2. I used to think "the future is bright for Africa." But the reality on the ground is Africa has no institutions, even more than some countries has control of as little as 20 and 25% of the countries they say they represent. The continent is doomed. Shamed to be of one.

  3. Probably, yes. The old colonialists are getting replaced by new colonialists, strong state institutions which offer their citizens safety, health and education are seldom in working order and climate change + sectarian and ethnic tensions are ever present. At least from what I've heard from the DRC, Sudan and even the seemingly stable states of Nigeria and South Africa. Much love from Germany, may our state finally pay fair reparations to Nama and Herero for the crimes committed there.

  4. The relevance of Africa’s institutions depends on their ability to deliver economic opportunity to the people of Africa.

Many of these problems cannot be solved by institutions insulated from the reality on the ground.

If France, Germany, the United States, and others do not engage African nations in trade and investment as equals, Russia and China have shown they are happy to do so in the West’s absence.

Our moralizing in the West about the evils of Russia and China are hollow across the entire continent of Africa, where the legacy of the West’s commitments to “Human Rights” are a history of slavery, colonial oppression, and apartheid.

Our global and intra-national institutions need strong leadership and a deeper understanding of the economic opportunities available for the most vulnerable and detached members of society in the countries they seek to represent; not just the institutional elite.

“The Wretched of the Earth” by Franz Fanon gives a decent introduction to this subject for Western minds.
