Burkina Faso and Mali, led by military juntas, skipped a pan-African defence meeting in Nigeria, highlighting the growing rift between these Sahel nations and their West African neighbours. The talks, aimed at finding solutions for Africa’s security needs, were attended only by Niger among the three allied Sahel states. This comes after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger exited the regional bloc ECOWAS earlier this year, forming their own Alliance of Sahel States. Relations soured after military coups in all three nations, with the juntas resisting the bloc’s calls for a return to democratic rule. Honestly, this just shows how deep the rift is getting between the Sahel states and the rest of West Africa. Burkina Faso and Mali skipping the talks isn’t surprising anymore. The fact that they’re leaning on Russia instead of working with ECOWAS or their neighbors says a lot. It’s the regular people who end up suffering the most from all this political chaos.
