More than 50 people were shot including eight who were killed in separate shootings across Chicago during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
According to Chicago Police Department data, 58 total people were shot in 37 separate shootings between Friday and Monday evenings.
While the homicide total falls in line with numbers from the same weekend in other recent years — the CPD reported between six and nine homicides over each Labor Day weekend from 2022-24 — the overall number of people shot jumped up.
The 58 people shot between Friday and Monday is approximately double the amount from the 2024 Labor Day weekend. In 2023, 39 people were shot, six fatally over the holiday weekend.
“Every time someone gets shot, every time someone loses their life to violence, it’s a tragedy,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said at an unrelated press conference Tuesday. “My heart breaks every single day when these tragedies occur. As far as the work we are doing to drive violence down in the city of Chicago, I’m even more committed after a weekend like the one we just experienced.”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged in recent weeks to send thousands of National Guard troops to Chicago to crack down on crime in the city, even as Gov. JB Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson and other local officials have pledged to fight those plans.
Even with the uptick in violence over the weekend, the number of shootings and homicides in Chicago in 2025 remain down more than 30% each compared to last year, according to city data.
A federal judge on Tuesday ruled the Trump administration violated federal law through a similar deployment of National Guard troops to Southern California during immigration enforcement operations and accompanying protests, though that order did not require the remaining troops there to be withdrawn.
