A Finnish court has sentenced Nigerian separatist leader Simon Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences. Ekpa, a 40-year-old dual Finnish–Nigerian national, is a former athlete turned lawyer and activist. He declared himself “prime minister” of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile in 2023 and was linked to enforcing ‘sit-at-home’ orders that disrupted life in southeastern Nigeria. He had earlier been associated with the separatist organization IPOB. Finnish authorities found him guilty of supplying armed groups, inciting crimes, and aggravated tax fraud. Ekpa denied the charges, claiming he was simply conveying local government messages.
