CLARKSBURG, W.Va (WDTV) -For years, the West Virginia Black Heritage Festival has impacted the community. The event that began as a small Kelly Miller school alumni meeting in 1990 has grown into a local tradition to the organizers’ delight.
“It’s exciting to see how large the festival has become and the interest that has grown over the years,” said Sherri James, WV Black Heritage Festival, organizer.
The weekend begins Friday with a golf tournament at 8 a.m. followed by a youth block party at Jackson Square. Saturday, the festival kicks off at noon with an opening ceremony and will feature vendors, performances and more. Officials are glad to share Black culture with North Central West Virginia.
“I think it’s very important to share our culture with others the interest has grown over the years, it’s just an opportunity for us to let the wider community understand our culture,” said James.
The event concludes on Sunday with a fundraising effort for Agape Life Ministries, which was hit by flooding everyone is welcome to stop by.
