While Ghana’s visa-free policy for West Africans made the deal possible, it comes amid rising anti-Nigerian sentiment at home. Critics warn such agreements turn Africa into a “migrant dumping ground,” even as the EU considers similar return hubs. Despite rights concerns, Mahama says ties with Washington remain strong and are “tightening.”
