Trump declares drug cartels operating in Caribbean unlawful combatants

President Donald Trump has declared drug cartels to be unlawful combatants and says the United States is now in a “non-international armed conflict,” according to an administration memo circulated on Thursday, after recent U.S. strikes on boats in the Caribbean.

Scripps News confirmed on Wednesday that a memo from the White House to Congress designated drug cartel officials “unlawful combatants” engaged in an “armed conflict.”

“As we have said many times, the President acted in line with the law of armed conflict to protect our country from those trying to bring deadly poison to our shores, and he is delivering on his promise to take on the cartels and eliminate these national security threats from murdering more Americans,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said in a statement.

The move comes after the U.S. military last month carried out three deadly strikes against alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean. At least two of those operations were carried out on vessels that originated from Venezuela.

  1. I am absolutely NOT in favor of drug trafficking. That said, most of you who support this are failing to understand the implications of turning a criminal act into an act of war. The long term implications on civil liberties scares me. We have no business hunting criminals in international territory. We need to focus on taking care of our people here.

  2. Congress has the power to declare war (not the president)….he didn't even have the guts to call it a "special military operation" (no proof of anything, no boarding/seizing of boats, crew, "contraband"….nothing)…just blows people out of the water.

  3. American president Netanyahu , Donald Trump is PA of Netanyahu American leaders is Agent of isreal America is the biggest terrorist, America supporting isreal for killing childrens and innocent peoples, isreal is the land mafia

  4. Violence is all they comprehend … sad but true … too much money involved … they will not quit without destruction.
Simple remedy … quit sendind boats, planes and cargo with and for manufacturing chemicals for drugs to America !!!

  5. War on Drugs been going on for years Around 10% gets caught. America loves Drugs too much. Even church going conservatives. The Truth hurts. But I wish Drugs can be Eliminated

  6. Just a reminder: we have been at war with drugs since President Ford, and now we have someone with the determination to do something, and the left-wing is crying because it's working.

  7. Fentanyl is so dangerous kids who have accidentally touched contaminated objects in public parks have had to be resuscitated, law enforcement exposed to it have coded, And kids in a daycare in NYC where it was secretly stored died. Now it's carfentanyl, a hundred times more lethal than fentanyl. This is chemical warfare on the American people.

  8. For Christ sake, the CR is clean! Pass it Dems and then get to negotiating in good faith and find common ground with what America votes for. If you are only democratic for the free money, we don’t need you. Get out. We can’t stand your lies anymore. I read the CR. What you’ve asked for is poor budgeting, a huge waste of our tax dollars and just another free money extravaganza for crooked Dems.

  9. “Billionaire New York developer Donald Trump said the nation's drug enforcement effort is "a joke" and repeated his call for the degalization of drugs Friday during a luncheon held by the Miami Herald.
"We're losing badly the war on drugs,"
Trump said. "You have to legalize drugs to win that war. You have to take the profit away from these drug czars."
Tax revenues from a legalized drug trade could be spent to educate the public on the dangers of drugs, Trump said during a speech at the newspaper's Company of the Year Awards luncheon.”

Better strategy, Mr. President, no question.

  10. This will also apply to drug cartels within the US (excepting the CIA and DoD of course). Another excuse to deploy troops everywhere – fascist takeover happening right before our very eyes.

  11. Trouble is that if trump said they were dope criminals is that really true BECAUSE HE NEVER EVER TELLS THE TRUTH EVER. You need proof to go into other countries space and start killing people otherwise you start WARS. TRUMPS WORD IS NO GUARANTEE AT ALL. Innocent people may have killed for nothing.

  12. This is all drama for the masses. It will not stop the demand for drugs. Moreover, it does nothing for the American people who are sick and disabled – many of whom got addicted to drugs pushed by the biggest and most dangerous of all drug pushers, the corporate pharmaceutical entities and the medical establishment.

  13. The Caribbean people are just 44 million people spread across these small islands, trying to live in peace. Trying to stay out of international politics. Our islands cannot withstand the backlash of a wider war between larger countries, playing out in our waters.

Show some empathy people. Stop picking on the small.
