Charlotte city council member and BPC member James Mitchell said the push for transportation aligns with the values of the caucus and needs of the community.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg has endorsed the one percent sales tax referendum for public transportation.
The referendum is on the ballot for voters in November. If voted for, there will be a one percent sales tax increase from 7.25% to 8.25%. The tax will pay for a 30-year transit plan to expand the light rail to more parts of the city, add rapid bus lines for fester service, roadway upgrades and invest in bike and pedestrian infrastructure.
Charlotte city council member and BPC member James Mitchell said the push for transportation aligns with the values of the caucus and needs of the community.
“Our endorsement of the referendum reflects both the values of the organization and the future we want for this community — a future where transportation connects people to opportunity, strengthens neighborhoods and supports growth for decades to come,” Mitchell said.
The referendum began as the PAVE Act, sponsored by Mecklenburg County state house representatives. The act was signed by Gov. Josh Stein in July then added to the ballot.
The endorsement passed with overwhelming support in the Black Political Caucus, according to BPC chair Jocelyn Jones-Nolley.
“We look forward to partnering with the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority and other stakeholders to ensure community concerns are prioritized and addressed, and that the benefits of this investment are shared broadly across all neighborhoods,” Jones-Nolley said. “This is about ensuring growth that works for everyone.”
Early voting in Mecklenburg County begins Thursday, Oct. 16 to Saturday, Nov. 1.
Election day is Tuesday, November 4 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
