Before Hurricane Melissa: Why Jamaica’s Most Vulnerable Village Stays

Before Hurricane Melissa: Why Jamaica’s Most Vulnerable Village Stays

I’m in Kingston, Jamaica, as the island prepares for Hurricane Melissa, a storm that could become one of the strongest to ever hit this country.
From fishing villages to city streets, people are boarding up, praying, and waiting. It’s not about panic, it’s about preparation. And for many, the hardest part is the waiting.
Hurricane Melissa is forecast to bring winds over 150 mph, massive storm surge, and catastrophic flooding across parts of Jamaica and the Caribbean.
This is what it looks and feels like before the storm hits, through the eyes of the people who live here.

  1. It’s surreal to watch these videos in reverse chronological order! Bravo on your productions and documentary! My memories are from fleeing Hurricanes Andrew and Kevin. Just looking back brings a flood of emotion id rather never revisit.

Port Royal!!!! I keep telling my friends that “Pirates of the Caribbean” really was based here in true stories!

  2. This was definitely man-made.. Jamaica is under attack for their land— equivalent to New Orleans after Katrina. This may have something to do with that smart city 2030 agenda, IYKYK.

  3. Now that the storm has passed.. Did you return to this area to observe if these people LIVED or did they make it? They sounded too sure that Hurricane Melissa would NOT affect their lives. @JonathanPetramala please respond!

  4. Is there an update on how these people are? I can’t stop thinking about them with all of the images coming out from Jamaica of areas less vulnerable than port royal

  5. All those homes flooded under 4/6/10 feet of water with sewage flowing between homes. They should be condemned. I saw one housing scheme completely under water. They cannot go back and live in these homes.

  6. Coming back here a week after the hurricane to wonder how these people fared. The storm hit the west side of the Island – they are on the east. And the death toll – so far at least – hasn't been as high as was feared. (Even one death is too many, but so far it is not nearly as bad as it could have been, and I hope that doesn't change.)

  7. Perilous is the condition of those who, growing weary of their watch, turn to the attractions of the world. While the man of business is absorbed in the pursuit of gain, while the pleasure lover is seeking indulgence, while the daughter of fashion is arranging her adornments—it may be in that hour the Judge of all the earth will pronounce the sentence: “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” Daniel 5:27
