Are Africans being duped into fighting Russia’s war in Ukraine?

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says his government has received pleas from 17 of its citizens who are trapped fighting as mercenaries in Donbas. The men are pleading for help to return home from the key battleground in Russia’s war on Ukraine.

It wasn’t immediately clear which side the men were fighting on, but at the end of last month Kenya’s Foreign Ministry acknowledged that some of its nationals have also been recruited into Russia’s war machine.

In September, Kenya’s Transnational Organized Crime Unit found 21 Kenyan men who were “awaiting processing to Russia” at apartments close to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Victims told police they’d agreed to pay thousands of dollars for visas, travel and accommodation.

And Russia also seems to be pulling people into its frontline ranks through deception. Some recruits answer social media ads promising safe military jobs far from the fighting. Others are brought to Russia under false pretences and made to sign contracts they don’t understand.

It’s thought Moscow has lost more than a million soldiers, who it needs to replace. DW’s Max Zander and Felix Maringa report the story of one man who says he was tricked into joining the Russian army.

  1. My fellow Africans, please stop being deceived! Fight for recall democracy in Africa and free trade with Europe, that's our future and Western Europeans are our closest friends! Russia and China are pure evil and we don't want anything to do with them! Thank you!!

  2. Sure they fought for Russia.
I've watched some videos on Telegram where africans were fighting off Ukrainian FPV-drones attacking them and I should admit that one of them succeeded. Mayby they thought before going to russia that this war is like those African militia-style shoot'n'scoot tactics. No, this war is more like WWI/WWII

  3. Duped? Why not just physically grab them and force into battle as Kiev does? Why ask when they can just press gang conscipts in vans as Zelenskys goons? Angela Jollie just lost her driver to one of these "democratic" gangs physically forcing men to war. But sure, Russia is the only bad side right Dw?

  4. They lie. Africans go fight for Russia, it is not new. They say this after coming home or being taken for hostage. Africans think it is okay to go kill Ukrainians it seems. They kille each other all the time and blame the wests.

  5. How horrible is this situation😮😮, never turn over your passports to anyone except the police in uniform. Very sad, very sad. But he took a chance by escaping and saved himself from instant death by fighting a unknown war..May God continue to protect this young brother..😊
    RUSSIA IS DESPERATE!!
TARGETING AFRICAN COUNTRIES FOR SOLDIERS… 😮😮😮

  6. Russia pays $2000pm, that is at least R20 000pm for contract soldiers and Russian prisoners who sign the contract get a free pardon too. SA needs to send our prisoners to Ukraine, where they can earn $$$$ instead of sitting around in jails, costing SA taxmoney. That tax money can be used to upgrade jails and create more jobs, they can even learn how to operate "real guns" and drones ect.
