JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shared the news that their first Black deputy passed away.

Sergeant Louie E. Smoke was hired back in 1968, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said Smoke faced challenges and hardships but noted that he never wavered in his mission to serve and protect.
“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to honor him during his lifetime, recognizing his monumental contributions to our community and the department,” wrote the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
