FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH AND ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH, A TIME TO RECOGNIZE THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE CARING FOR LOVED ONES LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S AND OTHER FORMS OF DEMENTIA. HERE IN MARYLAND. THE NUMBERS ARE STRIKING. MORE THAN 258,000 CAREGIVERS ARE PROVIDING NEARLY 300,000,000 HOURS OF UNPAID CARE, VALUED AT ABOUT $7 BILLION. THIS WEEKEND, THERE’S AN EVENT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THOSE CAREGIVERS, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY. AND JOINING US THIS AFTERNOON IS THE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION PROGRAM MANAGER WITH THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION, MARILYN MASSEY. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. REALLY APPRECIATE IT. MY PLEASURE. WELL, LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE, THIS AFRICAN AMERICAN CAREGIVER CONFERENCE, SPECIFICALLY. WHY IS THIS FOCUS FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CAREGIVERS SPECIFICALLY? WELL, FIRST OF ALL, AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE MORE THAN TWICE AS LIKELY TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH ALZHEIMER’S AND ALL OTHER TYPES OF DEMENTIA. SO THAT’S NUMBER ONE. AND THAT’S MORE THAN THE WHITE. OUR WHITE COUNTERPARTS, WE’RE TWICE AS LIKELY TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH THAT. AND THEN ALSO WITH THE RESOURCES THAT ARE OUT HERE, THE RESOURCES AND THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISEASE. PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW. THEY NEED TO KNOW. SO THOSE ARE THE TRUTHS IN THAT. SO WHAT KIND OF TOPICS WILL BE DISCUSSED DURING THE CONFERENCE? OH, IT’S GOING TO BE FABULOUS. FABULOUS. SO WE ARE FOCUSED ON BRAIN HEALTH. BRAIN HEALTH. WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN IS GOOD FOR YOUR BODY IF YOU WILL. SO WE’RE GOING TO DISCUSS THE US POINTER STUDY THAT WAS DONE OVER THE SUMMER. AND THAT SHOWED THE TWO DIFFERENT GROUPS GOING OVER WITHIN THE STUDY. ONE GROUP WAS CLOSELY WATCHED AND ANOTHER GROUP WAS SELF-PACED OR SELF-GUIDED. AND THESE TWO GROUPS, THEY IMPROVED IN SO MANY AREAS, AS IN THEIR EATING HABITS. EXERCISING. ALSO, SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT. AND THEY ACTUALLY LOWERED THEIR CHANCES FOR HYPERTENSION, DIABETES, ANYTHING, EVEN HEART DISEASE. YOU KNOW, BECAUSE OF WHAT THE STUDY PROVIDED FOR THEM. THAT’S GREAT. AND I IMAGINE FOR CAREGIVERS, JUST BEING WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE DEALING WITH THE SAME, I CAN IMAGINE THAT IS JUST VERY COMFORTING. YES, THAT’S THAT SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT THAT EACH OF US NEED, BUT ESPECIALLY THEM. YOU CAN BOUNCE IDEAS OFF OF ONE ANOTHER. AND, YOU KNOW, WE WANT EVERYONE TO WALK THIS JOURNEY, TO TAKE THIS WALK TOGETHER. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO WALK THIS JOURNEY BY THEMSELVES FOR SURE, BECAUSE IT’S DIFFICULT. IT’S TERRIBLY DIFFICULT.
