The Takaichi administration has made two major mistakes.

The second mistake was that, in the leaders’ speeches toward the G20 summit declaration (from which the United States did not participate!), the Japanese side used the phrase “promotion of free trade.” (Was it not the case that the United States refused to join the declaration precisely because it opposed making free trade a topic?) The tariff policy President Trump is pursuing clearly departs from free trade. The Takaichi administration effectively reversed itself. It would have been better to use phrasing such as “balanced trade” instead of “free trade.”
