A coup has been confirmed in Guinea Bissau.
Earlier, heavy gunfire was heard outside the presidential palace, just days after general elections.
Crowds of people were seen running from near the palace.
Two candidates have claimed victory, ahead of the release of results on Thursday.
Incumbent Umaro Sissoco Embalo is seeking a second term.
He ran against opposition contender Fernando Dias and 11 others.
Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque is monitoring developments from Dakar, in neighbouring Senegal.

Having travelled through the interior in November, in Guinea-Bissau, and systemically getting extorted by police/military (highwaymen) at checkpoints throughout the country, some violence or drama with the election seemed obvious: and it is so.
I came to the country to see it in the best light and try and bring eco-tourism here. Sadly, police and people in positions of power are selfish there and look out for themselves and not the welfare of the country. This is why the country is in difficulties constantly, not colonialism which has virtually zero effect now, fifty years later.
