Coast Guard veteran wrongly detained on Carnival cruise by ICE

A Phoenix couple says their 9-day Caribbean Carnival cruise ended in a traumatic case of mistaken identity after they said federal agents burst into their cabin early on the final morning and detained Jose Martinez — a U.S. citizen and Coast Guard veteran — while looking for someone else.

Martinez and his wife, Tamara Verhas, said the agents handcuffed him, separated him from his wife and held him for nearly two hours before verifying his identity with fingerprints and a photo. The couple says the agents believed his name matched a person wanted on drug trafficking warrants. They also say there was no apology after he was returned to the ship.

  1. All they do is fabricate evidence. Obviously the only they were after him is his skin colour and they were trying to find an excuse for this illegal detention. This country is so corrupt !

  2. Incompetence galore at every level, every single agent involved should be terminated, they are a threat to freedom…carnival is culpable for complacency! Carnival alliqed this…they should have warned the man when ice asked to board and go to the room, xaptain?
