Ibrahim Traore’s Snake Killers Project | How 30 Thousand Mongooses Changed Burkina Faso

In one of the most controversial decisions in modern African leadership, Ibrahim Traore approved a project that stunned the nation and drew global attention. Facing a deadly snake crisis in rural Burkina Faso, his government turned to an unconventional solution: releasing 30 thousand mongooses to eliminate venomous snakes.

At first, the idea seemed logical. Mongooses are natural snake killers. But nature does not follow political plans.

This documentary uncovers what really happened after the release — the ecological consequences, the public backlash, and how a dangerous experiment forced Burkina Faso to rethink leadership, science, and responsibility. From snakebite deaths and failing antivenom systems to environmental collapse and a scientific breakthrough, this story reveals the hidden cost of bold decisions.

Was Ibrahim Traore reckless — or courageous enough to act when others hesitated?
Did this project save lives, or did it create a new crisis?

As Africa News continues to debate Traore’s leadership, this video offers a deeper look beyond headlines, into the realities faced by Burkina Faso and the lessons the world cannot afford to ignore.

Watch until the end to understand how 30,000 mongooses changed Burkina Faso — and what this means for Africa’s future.

  1. Mongooses work. We used them in Jamaica. Unfortunately, our pitons are not harmful, and they took out most of our population of harmless snakes. They are now hardly ever seen, and mongoose stay away from populated areas. Mongooses get rid of snakes quite quickly and they are easy to work around when they overpopulate… In Jamaica, many hunters catch mongooses for Chinese folks that love to eat them and will pay a hefty price. That keeps the population 'acceptable'.
