INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Black Expo, Inc. is set to host a family-friendly Martin Luther King Jr. Day event on Jan. 19, 2026, from noon to 3 p.m. at its headquarters, located at 601 N. Shortridge Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46219.
The event aims to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and promote social impact and unity among diverse community members. Edward Rogers, the Senior Director of Community Initiatives, emphasizes the importance of engaging youth and families in activities that reflect Dr. King’s values, focusing on themes such as justice, unity and hope.
Activities planned for children and youth ages 3 to 18 include art projects, storytelling and competitions centered around the themes of justice and community involvement. Food will be provided at the event while supplies last.
During the event, youth will have the opportunity to participate in the “Dream Justice Knowledge Bowl,” which will focus on civic engagement and social justice, connecting to Dr. King’s legacy.
Maqube Reese, Education Program Manager at IBE, noted the goal is to foster an environment where young people can express their creativity and learn about their rights and responsibilities in society. “Collective action is essential as we shape the second quarter of the 21st century,” Reese said, highlighting the proactive role of youth in community development.
The event will also include an art gallery showcasing Dr. King’s quotes and an interactive art activity that engages attendees in reflecting on his contributions to civil rights. These initiatives are designed to enhance literacy and teamwork among participants.
Rogers explained, “Our commitment manifests through unique events that reflect Indiana’s evolving landscape while honoring figures like Dr. King. We encourage families to register to ensure we have enough resources for everyone.” Their ongoing efforts contribute significantly to the local community, with IBE continuing to serve as a vital organization for promoting youth development and engagement.
