South Africa: Cape Town highway wall plan sparks fierce debate over crime and inequality

Cape Town’s proposed 8km security wall along the N2 highway has sparked fierce debate.
City officials say the 3m barrier is needed to protect motorists from stone-throwing attacks, violent robberies and ambushes on the route linking the airport to the city centre.
Critics argue the wall will do little to curb crime and will instead deepen social divisions, further separating impoverished neighbourhoods such as Nyanga and Gugulethu from wealthier areas more than 30 years after apartheid ended. The project is estimated to cost roughly nine million dollars.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller reports from Cape Town, South Africa.

  1. The ANC built a wall there and it was dismantled for shack building, if it is going to save lives and prevent an easy route for thieves, then who cares what a hand full of people have to say or even other political parties who just look for voter support

  2. They don't even care about cameras, they don't even try to hide in places with them. Whoever will be watching those footages will be entertained with kisses they'll be blowing and middle fingers at that camera

  3. Until the "community activists", "social justice warriors" and apologists can get these people to change their criminal ways, walls are necessary to keep travelers SAFE. Anyone who throws a brick or rock at a moving vehicle is a potential MURDERER!

  4. "Put a plaster on that festering wound and conceal it from view' mentality as expected; turn a blind eye on the root causes of the apalling societal inequality. But ya, let the circus go on…

  5. I dont think they will ever solve the problem of inequality – Itsnot only an african problem – Only 2 classes haves and the have nots – Thats just the way it is!
