Is DR Congo Baiting the US to Enter Its War Against M23 Rebels? | Firstpost Africa | N18G

The Democratic Republic of Congo has reportedly made a high-stakes gambit in its conflict-torn eastern region by offering the US access to the Rubaya coltan mine. This strategic move, part of a mineral pact brokered by the Trump administration, carries a significant catch: the mine is currently controlled by M23 rebels and the Congo River Alliance (AFC)—both of which are under US sanctions. The mineral deal highlights Washington’s aim to loosen China’s grip on African mineral reserves. However, with the rebels generating nearly $800,000 monthly from the site, experts suggest that Kinshasa’s offer may be an attempt to draw the US military directly into the battlefield.

  1. Peace and stability must come first. Congolese refugees in neighboring countries are filled with people who want to return home, the Banyamulenge and Tutsi minorities are still being denied their basic rights. Meanwhile, the Kinshasa government is attempting to reframe this conflict as an economic war

  2. The DRC belongs to its citizens and to Africa. It is a bad idea for African stability when incompetent leaders invite foreign intervention to escape internal conflicts. This path will haunt the entire region for centuries to come

  3. You africains like insulting others. Did any of you ask why this war has been going for past 30 years and 15 millions congolases have died.
Did you ask why Rwanda did become first exporter of coltan when it does not have in its soil?
Now uganda is first exporters of gold where it does not have much in its soil?
Congolases do not want to be slave. The war will go on and at the end congo will win.
Congo need to deal with usa and othetd countries who need these minerals. To buy them from congo than from rwanda or uganda
Do you remember charles Taylor of liberia with blood diamond. Exactly it is what is going on in its of congo.
Blood minerals. Blood with 15 millions of congolases killed in past 30 years.
As long as kagame and Museveni are still in power, est of congo and great lakes region as a whole will not be in peace

  4. some of you should ask how long king leopold II of belgium ruled but at the end he was defeated.
Same things here, darks forces in this war including kagame and Museveni will be defeated. They are not the first to occupy congolases lands.
True congolases patriots are fighting and will win.
Because it is joy to be free and independant than rich and slave.

  5. The whole of the DRC belongs to the Congolese citizens, and the lawfully elected government has the right to sign the agreements on behalf of the nation. M23 and Rwanda may hold control of that legion at the moment, but it is still part of DRC territory and they won't hold it forever.

  6. All we have to do is rewind we brought Mobutu to power, removed , Lumumba . Uganda came in brought Kabila senior to power who was assassinated by his own soldiers he refused to pay wages. Kabila jr takes over after his education Makerere university in Uganda university. The current president. was elected by the majority of citizens of DRC. On the minerals. Russia has already signed an oil deal to take oil out for the next 20 years. After will return control to Government in Kinshasa. The rest of the mineral deals I have no clue.

  7. “According to UN estimates (exaggerated?), rebels collect 800K per month from taxes on Rubaya colton production and trade.” That’s less than 10 million a year. Will the US go to war for $10M? What’s the cost of deploying and supplying an American brigade in Rubaya? How does this add up from a ‘transactional’ point of view, which consists of getting out of more than u put in?

  8. It’s going down by any means necessary, some fools talkin about 2 DRC? This means western DRC will be land locked 🔒 like RWANDA 🇷🇼?? STUPID IGNORANT SENSATIONALISM BS. Fuckery

  9. Rubaya is Rwanda's bloodline and a good funding for the M23 insurgency. Currently, the little bit they manually mine there is sent to the EU under the annual billion dollar contract with Rwanda. M23 believe they have miraculously formed a country there and are swiftly installing all kinds of institutions. They even sell visas to visitors! Difficult days lie ahead.
However, I think by giving the mines to US as long as peace is guaranteed, Congo could see a little bit of development. You cannot develop a country when any money you make is just used on additional military might for war. Past several peace agreements over decades haven't resolved the conflict and let's hope this new move will help stabilise the situation. Even if the country doesn't make any money from the mines, as long as there is peace, there are many other areas that can be explored, such as tourism, timber, hydro electricity, industrial agriculture, etc.

  10. Dear Congolese, you can use the USA to take our land that our ancestors named. But, I promise you I’ll pass down this grudge to my children. This is only the beginning, my children will know the names of the land you’ve taken, our land that you’ve given to Americans aka Europeans. The Bakongo kingdom extended to Gabon, Brazzaville and Angola. It was never part of the East. Rubaya literally means valley in Kinyarwanda. Virunga is a common name for volcanoes in Kinyarwanda. Gahuza Ibiyaga means where the water meet in Kinyarwanda. Ijwi means voice in Kinyarwanda. Kivu means a mass of ashes in Kinyarwanda. You’re telling a clown from Kinshasa has the right to that land than I do? Remember the USA empire only a few centuries old, it will eventually disappear. You should understand that the land always rejects intruders. America will reject white people and that land will also reject you. I will pass down this grudge to my sons. I never planned to have many children but you’ve now given me a reason. We will be back. This is just the beginning.

  11. M23 does not spread terror. It has rather stopped terror from the Kinshasa regime, including bombings by attack drones and artillery shells that kill innocent civilians. The territory under M23 control is well governed, unlike government controlled areas that are under anarchy.
Journalism should be based on facts, not propaganda.
