African journalists on a trip to Israel – and the coverage that resulted | The Listening Post

For decades, the Israeli government and pro-Israel organisations have sponsored trips for politicians, celebrities and journalists, inviting them to visit and, as they put it, tell the “real story” about Israel. In the past, those invitations largely targeted figures from Western countries. But since October 7th, there has been a noticeable shift towards African journalists and social media influencers.

The objective is clear: to shape coverage in African media and influence audiences across the continent.

The Listening Post’s Nicholas Muirhead reports on the African journalists taking part in these fully funded, tightly managed visits to Israel.

  1. The same Journalist were also culprit on Tigray genocide where over a million died, I wonder why Al Jazeera hasn't covered it as much as Gaza Genocide.

  2. Something many people don’t fully understand is how deep and meaningful the connection between Ethiopia and Israel truly is. The relationship is not just political or modern it is historical, cultural, and deeply rooted in identity. For centuries, Ethiopia has been home to a proud and ancient Jewish community, often known as Beta Israel. Many Ethiopians, including my own family, carry Jewish ancestry that connects us directly to Israel.

For me, this connection is personal. My grandparents trace their roots back to Jewish ancestors, and that heritage is something I hold with pride. It represents resilience, faith, and a shared history that has endured across generations and across continents. The bond between Ethiopia and Israel is reflected in shared traditions, religious history, and the journey of Ethiopian Jews who returned to Israel over time.

Because of my heritage, my love for Israel is not just admiration from afar it is part of my family story. It is part of who I am.

  3. During the Tigray war Genocide was committed and still going on silently but this Ethiopian journalist didn't say a word about it except supporting it using their media outlet even right now this moment people in Tigray Amhara and oromiya and other regions still a civil war going on and no one wants to talk about the people that are suffering dying . again the regime going for another war on Tigray and also to invade Eritrea .
Those the true journalists who tried to speak about are arrested some fled the country but most of them are sold their soul to work for the regime in Addis and these are the ones and they aren't credible sources of info but lies and fake stories propagating one sides only . Hope justice will be served in future…

  4. For many Ethiopian Christians, Israel is a country of deep interest. News and coverage about the holy sites in Israel, as well as any political and war news, are given too much attention, and any journalist would feel compelled to catch that interest and to fill that gap. It has been a long time since we have such news from independent journalists, and many more thousands of videos are released on YouTube periodically, regarding Israel independently. This allegation by Al Jazeera is somewhat baseless and provides no evidence that the Ethiopian journalists received any compensation. (at least, I am very sure that the journalist who represents the EBS cannot do that, since it is a big institution and can't be manipulated with a piece of pocket money for an hour of coverage)

  5. As an Ethiopian we love Israel 🇮🇱 and also understand the Palestinian’s pain but we are too good for this drama we know the agenda Timnit (Juntawa)😊 lemayakachu leboch
    🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹tashenifalech

  6. As an Ethiopian who have strong religious historical ties with Israel, I am so proud that our journalist visited Israel.
Aljazeera the most bias media outlet will never tell you how Hamas is. Firing amongst the civilians or after operation he hides within civilians.
As an Ethiopian we also care for innocent victims from both Israel and Palestine.
Timnet Gebru is another supporter of the bias who stand with TPLF genocider of Amhara Micadra.

  7. 🇪🇹 is with Palestine no matter what they say we are awake and aware about the world.we are not blind like the Arabs and western people WE KNOW AND WE CARE ABOUT OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS ❤ PALESTINE 🇵🇸

  8. If anyone is wondering why Ethiopian journalists easily to participate Israel propaganda, as an Ethiopian, this is not surprising to me.
the vast majority of Ethiopian Christians ,are Christian Zionist whether Orthodox Or protestant they strongly support Israel.they openly defend Israel’s actions, even when Palestinian children are being killed and starving.

Some even say, “We don’t support Arabs. Palestinians are Arabs, so we don’t support them.” They openly express that they do not care about Palestinian children . So honestly, When the majority holds these views, situations like this sadly become expected.

  9. You are being hypocritical by denying the genocide in Hamas-controlled areas while portraying living in Palestine as if it’s torture. You broadcast what you believe is true for yourself, yet you ignore the actions of middle east countries that commit widespread oppression, slavery, and violence, often exceeding even genocide. It seems you have been misled or brainwashed to cover up these realities. I stand with Ethiopian Journalists!

  10. Al Jazeera's media team needs to do more research before posting content like this. First of all, the TV team (EBS) that went from Ethiopia to Israel is not a political TV. It is known locally for its non-political content. It was one of the few media outlets that did not broadcast propaganda about Tigray genocide.

  11. You have mixed up an unrelated journalist in this story. Egregnaw Media was not invited for the funded visit. He was on a pilgrimage and, in the meantime, interviewed a Member of Parliament.

Timnit Gebru, a descendant of the butcherous former Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, please stop spreading fabricated narratives. If you were truly a journalist, you would speak about the innocent Ethiopians who were massacred under the TPLF-led EPRDF regime simply because of their identity.

You appeared on Al Jazeera defending Palestine—not for the sake of justice, but to attack Orthodox-affiliated media. You know this very well.

The legacy of your party, the TPLF, and its ethnic-based politics of hatred is what ultimately destroyed Tigray.
