During his state of the nation address, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that he will deploy the army to the country’s two largest economic hubs, Cape Town and Johannesburg. This is not the first time the army has stepped in to counter the country’s endemic violent crime. The troops will assist the police in tackling soaring gang violence, as well as illegal mining activities. According to the World Bank, violent crime is draining about 10 percent from South Africa’s economy.
Will deploying the army help Pretoria bring an end to instability, or is this a short-term solution to a deep-seated problem?

Drug use is a root problem. Remove all drug addicts, put them in 5 year detox camps. Lockup all gang members in a military like prison for life. Or introduce capital punishment for armed robbery, murder and drug dealing. Problem solved.
The president must find the courage to be ruthless.
Nationalise the natural resources, take back the stolen land and redistribute it between the citizens, create a sovereign wealth fund with the natural resources for education, agricultural, and skill building sectors build the economy for the people of Africa stop selling out Africans. The army will fight us the citizens and defend their criminal friends.we cannot be fooled by the ANC.i don't trust anything from the ANC mouth.they are all criminals
If theres identified targets, raids or armed neutralizarion then yes. But there must be an amendment to the laws.
The army can't just be used for killing gang members. They are still SA citizens with all rights. They have to deem the gangs, their known territories and properties, delare them " enemies of the state" now they have no laws. A complete locational lockdown then a wipe over with military push. Give them 3 days to evacuate or else they are rebels by law. Now we can shoot … declare gangs as rebels. Well they are… no police can get to them and they live in south africa but don't follow the laws.
They are state enemies and must be stripped of their citizenship, open robben island. Its a waste being a museum. We need that prison. Thats why the apartheid government made a prison there. If we are serious, within 1 year there will be chance….. let police investigate??? Most the police are on gang payrolls too.
Make that place a red zone then move in.
The rest will take the next governmental warning seriously.
There will be casualties yes but its a fight for whats right.
Those people are rebels that have taken over a part of the country. Remove the police and lets treat the gangs as rebels.. simple
Can you imagine being so delusional that you believe this place can be saved? Its a failed experiment. No one wants to address it honestly.
It’s funny listening to this black lady talk about crime and inequality when anyone with half a brain knows the ANC is the biggest and most lucrative crime syndicate in the country. ANC corruption and incompetence has created a situation where 60% of youth are unemployed. These youth are forced into the informal economy where crime is one of the employers.
Drug addiction is the scourge of the world 🌎.
This is NOT going to work without FINDING and ARRESTING criminals, Placing strategic cameras to capture and arrest criminals, installing checkpoints and searching for guns and drugs… Curfews and youth Jobs, Ticking those who have dirty yards and broken windows, Creating Jobs and providing skill importing skilled talent and Job creators to develop new cities, and tax payer base. revamping the education system to diversify the talent pool… just sending Troops will NOT solve any problem!
Crime runs from top to bottom. Start at the top!!!!!
Fruitless. Army cant be there forever 😊
It can easily be solved. Call the A.W.B. They're less politically correct than the military. Every gang will be taken out. They won't though due to political tension.
The only way is if the army and cops work with community members that has more in depth detail on who the gangs are and where the issues are ,not just getting the army to walk around and search, that won't help much if gangs lay low till the army leaves
