BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (WLOS) — In April of 2025, during Helene recovery efforts, NASCAR driver Greg Biffle flew in the Easter Bunny for an egg drop to help lift the spirits of Helene victims in Black Mountain.

This year, the Black Mountain community honors the late NASCAR driver and his family who suddenly passed away on Dec. 18 after a private jet crashed at an airport in Statesville, North Carolina, while trying to land.

Biffle also played a pivotal role in recovery efforts, a single rescue mission, soon expanding into a week-long mission with others joining the effort.

As previously reported, Biffle and his team flew to hard-hit areas cut off by the storm, including Pensacola in Yancey County and Chimney Rock, delivering supplies to those in need.

Hopping for Hope honored Biffle and his family for all they did for the Helene-affected community.

“We are honoring Greg Biffle with this drop this year because he was our original pilot, so today is an extra special day. Not only are we paying it forward for the community, but we’re also paying it forward for the Biffle family, who did so much for this community during Helene,” said Heather Kamasa, organizer with A Hand from Above.

The egg drop was held for four different age groups, dropping over 17,000 eggs filled with candy or money.

Many adults attended the event along with local vendors, food and music.

The organizers say they hope the event brings more visibility to the ongoing recovery efforts.
