Laura Kinney-Porter was in sixth grade the first time she heard about her grandmother.

Her grandmother had died in 1977 and her grandfather remarried. His second wife was the only grandmother Kinney-Porter knew.

One day Kinney-Porter’s mother took her down to the Main Library to scroll through local newspapers on microfilm. Searching reel after reel, she finally came upon a story in The Cincinnati Enquirer from 1969 featuring a woman honored by the Wayfarer’s Club of Cincinnati as “Mother of the Year.”
