Health disparities during Black Maternal Health Week

During this Black Maternal Health Week, the focus is on why Black women are five times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related causes than white women.

A bill introduced in Albany aims to address the issue.

The “Maternal Health, Dignity and Consent Act” is sponsored by state Sen. Julia Salazar. Its aim is to help instill trust between pregnant Black women and their doctors, which has been historically lacking within this community.

Dr. Stacy Sun, a Rochester-based OB-GYN, discussed the underlying reasons for the disparity in mortality rates between pregnant white and Black women with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
