ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — The South Carolina chapter of Voices of Black Mothers United hosted a “5K Walk for Peace: Reclaiming Our Youth” on Saturday, in recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

The event took place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital walking track in Orangeburg.

Organizers said the family-friendly event shows community solidarity with survivors of crime through a peaceful walk.

The program began with a ceremony featuring welcome remarks, survivor recognition, and a keynote address focused on violence prevention and community restoration.

Participants walked the track in a unified show of support. Guests also had access to mental health organizations, victim advocacy services, and law enforcement agencies at resource tables throughout the event.

The program will end with a balloon release symbolizing remembrance, hope, and unity. Registration was required, and the event is open to the public.

Michelle Green, Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler, local county and city council members, Superintendent of Education Shawn Foster, and a local youth minister attended.

Voices of Black Mothers United is an initiative of the Woodson Center and is made up of mothers who have lost children to violence and are working to strengthen communities in their memory.
