WINDSOR, N.Y. (WBNG) — A family from Windsor photographed a massive, furry visitor in their backyard this weekend.

The giant black bear stopped by Seward Road for a visit Saturday night.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said the average male black bear weighs 300 pounds.

Bears are naturally curious and intelligent, and for the most part, do not come into contact unless food is involved.

When bears learn to take food from humans, they can become bold and aggressive, according to the DEC.

DEC officials advise against feeding bears, especially during the warmer months, as it could alter their foraging habits and behavior.

Intentionally feeding bears is illegal in New York State.

Bears eat a variety of foods in the wild, including grasses, berries, fruit, nuts, seeds, insects, grubs, and carrion, as well as human sources of food like corn, honey, bird seed, trash, and pet food when available.

As temperatures increase, bear sightings may be more common throughout the Southern Tier.
