1878 – Joseph Winters Earns Patent for Fire Escape Ladder
Joseph Winters, born in 1816, was an abolitionist and inventor who transformed firefighting technology. He developed a horse-drawn fire wagon with a foldable mounted ladder, earning a patent on May 7, 1878. This innovation allowed firefighters to quickly reach upper floors without unloading equipment, improving rescue efficiency and saving lives as cities and buildings grew taller.
1845 – Mary Eliza Mahoney is Born

On May 7, 1845, Mary Eliza was born in Massachusetts. She was the first professionally trained and licensed Black nurse in the United States. Despite racial discrimination, Mahoney graduated from the New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1879 and built a career as a private duty nurse. She co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, advocating for equality, professional standards, and opportunities for Black nurses nationwide.
