A report this week by Nature Sustainability has found that New Orleans has reached the point of no return in hopes of saving itself from going underwater due to climate change.
It wasn’t always this way, forced segregation caused the city to sink from bad planning and construction choices in an effort to keep Black communities away from white communities.
The city’s population has been falling since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it’s now at 362.154. Where are all those people going to go? In the housing crisis we have in the country now? Remember how many residents were stranded because they lacked the funds to get out of town?
According to researchers, more than half the sites are projected to face flood risk much sooner—as soon as 2050—and low-income, communities of color and other marginalized groups are the most at risk.
But wait- Miami, Florida is facing the same danger and it has a plan. Curious that a Republican led state would act so progressively about mitigating the results of climate change, while claiming it’s a hoax.
Incidentally, Oakland, California is in the same danger. The city is close to my heart, being a bridge away from my hometown of Alameda.
Where will Americans go when sea levels climb? What happens to people (like me) who have no funds to go anywhere?
