Milwaukee County data shows increase in suicide rate among Black community, older adults

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) — A new report examined 2,500 suicides in Milwaukee County between 2002 and 2024. Overall, suicide rates stayed relatively stable, but who is dying and how has changed significantly.

The data shows an increase among men, older adults, and Black residents, while suicides involving firearms rose from about 22% to more than half.

Joining us to break down the findings is Dr. Ben Weston, Milwaukee County’s chief health policy advisor.
