POMEROY, Ohio (WCHS) — Deputies are alerting a Meigs County community of recent bear activity.
A black bear was spotted along Nye Avenue in Pomeroy, according to a social media post from the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office.
The post said the bear is believed to be a young male that has not exhibited aggressive behavior.
Deputies said wildlife officials have been tracking the animal for several weeks.
Officials provided safety tips that will prevent the bear from being comfortable in the neighborhood:
- Do not feed or approach bears
- Maintain a safe distance
- Secure trash, pet food and birdfeeders
- Supervise pets, especially during nighttime hours
- Never corner, harass or provoke bears
Residents who encounter the bear are encouraged to remain calm, make noise and slowly move away.
Bear encounters in populated areas may be reported to the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office or the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
