DETROIT – As students across Metro Detroit get ready for summer break, one Detroit community group is preparing as well.
The group is ramping up a youth engagement effort to keep kids connected and supported while school is out.
New Era Detroit is calling on men across the city—specifically Black men—to join its “Brothas on the Block” program, where volunteers walk block to block in different neighborhoods to talk with residents and build relationships with young people.
“Always look at the summer months as a great opportunity for people to come out, get involved in their community,” said Zeek Williams, President and CEO of New Era Detroit. “So many people talk about the problem, but very little people want to put the work in and figure out solutions to help elevate us as a culture.”
Organizers say the focus on Black men is intentional, pointing to the need for visible, consistent mentorship and support in communities where many kids may not have men present in their daily lives.
“We’ve got to become a village,” Williams said. “So, how do we do that?”
During the walks, volunteers engage a wide range of neighbors—from elders and working families to other men in the community—but Williams said the priority is connecting with kids.
“We want you to be present and show up,” he said. “Most importantly, we build those key core relationships with the kids.”
Williams said the group is already seeing results, especially when strong turnouts bring a consistent presence to neighborhood streets.
“When you see 30 to 40 men at minimum, every single time, it’s heavy engagement,” Williams said. “Its presence. It’s love. It’s embracing. We are able to help solve a lot of issues right in the community.”
“Brothas on the Block” is held every other Thursday and is one of 17 programs sponsored by New Era Detroit. More information is available on the nonprofit’s social media platforms.
