What’s behind the rising violence in South Africa? | The Listening Post

A wave of xenophobic violence has spread across South Africa, fuelled by a toxic mix of anger, disinformation and inflammatory mobilisation online.

At the centre of the movement is Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma – radio personality turned political agitator – who has emerged as the face of the new anti-immigration group March and March.

Nicholas Muirhead reports.

  1. Shame on your south Africans instead of fighting the inqualities between white and black South Africans you attack the immigrants your brother's and sisters fellow Africans that shame on you this is no different to the apartheid

  2. This is a psy-op….. better question why is really directing this.. a radio influencer who talks about being the heronof the marginalized citizens and targets an even more marginalized migrant community…. someone's gonna problem reaction solution you if you don't wise up asap

  3. Oh wait isn’t America doing the same thing??? lol why it’s an issue over there but no one speaks what’s happening in America with the migrants

  4. Al Jazeera, you can do better than that. Although as a South African i do not agree with the approach March and March is using but we do have a problem in south africa. They are just shooting at the wrong target. You need to do more research on this issue.

  5. The claim that xenophobia is "very rife" across South Africa is a massive exaggeration.

Are there xenophobic incidents? Yes. They should be condemned wherever they happen. But taking isolated incidents and presenting them as the attitude of an entire country is simply dishonest.

South Africa remains home to millions of foreign nationals who live, work, study, and do business here every day. If the country were as uniformly hostile as some social media narratives suggest, that reality would not exist.

People also keep confusing immigration enforcement with xenophobia. They are not the same thing. 300 Ghanain nationals were repatriated claiming they feared remaing in SA, with only 10 having legal status. Enforcing immigration laws does not automatically equal hatred of foreigners.

Criticise crime. Criticise violence. Criticise specific incidents. But stop trying to brand an entire nation of more than 60 million people as xenophobic because it makes for a better headline.

  6. Anti immigration protests have gained traction globally. Its happened in the UK, Australia, Canada, America, SA etc the question is why. That is the real story not pretending like SA is an outlier lol

  7. Lies. The group has mentioned that they are against undocumented immigrants not all migrants. You can not minus people's lived experience. Children have died (more than 30) because of snacks they bought from shops owned by Somalis,Pakistani,Bangladeshi and Ethiopians.

You neglect to mention that March and March has stated on numerous times that no one should be attacked and no looting. You don't even state that drugs have been found in the places March and March has pointed out to Police.

    This is just bad reporting.

  8. The Propaganda western Media don't call trump and Ice Xenophobic but call South African Xenophobic .
When the EU rejects asylum immigrants they are not called Xenophobic .
Even when Ghana chases Nigerians away they are not called Xenophobic .
Only South Africans are called Xenophobic

  9. I used to respect Aljazira, but listening to this reporter narrative is just bad. He sounds like he's been watching those videos online that are deliberately pushed without context.
