Ebola outbreak in DR Congo expands: What are the risks? | DW News

The World Health Organization is warning that the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading faster than efforts to contain it.

More than 900 suspected cases and over 200 suspected deaths have been reported, making this one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks on record. Unlike previous outbreaks, the Bundibugyo strain currently spreading in the region has no approved vaccine or treatment.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited the epicenter of the outbreak in Bunia city as international aid arrives in an effort to slow transmission.

In this DW New report, DW News speaks with WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier and microbiologist Jason Kindrachuk about the risks, the response effort, and whether the outbreak could spread beyond the region.

  1. There is no Ebola in Uganda; dictator Museveni is lying. He just wants money to keep himself in power after rigging the vote. How come other countries surrounding Congo have no Ebola? Take it from me, who is a Ugandan, there is no Ebola in Uganda.

  2. Denis Sassou-Nguesso is the richest person in the Republic of the Congo, with an estimated net worth of $6.2 billion. saying that Canadians are heartless is ridiculous = their president is a multi billionaire!!!!

  3. WHY the heck do they think that taking someone's temperature will tell whether they have ebola or not?!! for instance I usually have a standard temperature of 97°, so when I have a fever I will be about 99, instead of the standard 101…. and all someone has to do is take some Tylenol to bring their fever down and they can scoop right through!

  4. If women are the caregivers to their sick family and families keep their loved ones at home in fear of the burnings, can families be given kits with medical supplies and training on how to manage their sick family and prevent spread of it? It’s like setting up a first responder system.

For grieving families, can they set up tents for them to hold funerals and way to go to the burial with staff?

  5. 11:12 Do you "get" what he is saying? He flew through it but essentially if you're not gonna allow these healthcare workers to freely leave the area (surely they monitor themselves) why would anyone want to volunteer? I wouldn't!!! Trump is forbidding Americans to return home from these areas, even though the US has any monitoring and healthcare they may need; AND these workers have paid into the US healthcare 'system' including financing the CDC, all of their lives via taxes!! This is INSANITY!! at work. Let Americans return home now!!!!! No quarantining elsewhere!!
