DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (WMC) – A decision has been reached in an ongoing legal battle alleging that DeSoto County’s redrawn district lines fuel racial gerrymandering.
Court documents filed Wednesday show that a federal judge ruled in favor of the county government, meaning the election districts will remain the same for now.
The lawsuit was originally filed in 2024.
The plaintiffs—including the DeSoto County NAACP chapter—claimed the district lines made in 2022 violated the Voting Rights Act, making it almost impossible for Black-supported candidates to win local elections.
The argument was heard in the Oxford federal court.
