This weekend in Prince George’s County, people came together for a community baby shower aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among Black and Brown families across the DMV.
With a lot of energy and laughter in the room, hundreds of people gathered at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
The free event offered support for expecting mothers and parents with young children. Plus, many were able to obtain much needed diapers, wipes and car seats for their kids.
The main idea? help young families who in many cases are just trying to survive in today’s economy.
“The cost of living and inflation is really high right now, and it’s difficult for families to obtain and get the stuff that they need for children. So you know, diapers, clothes, formula things like that,” said Kieara Linnear, a DMV mom.
“You want to do stuff that you would want people to do for you, you know what I’m saying, so it’s just about being reciprocal, being empathetic and thoughtful,” said Kiera Myles, the mother of a 3-year-old
This is the third year the event is taking place, and this time around it was made possible thanks to MedStar Health and volunteers from the Clinton Baptist Church.
“This is a great opportunity for not only resources and things that help them to be successful as parents, men and women as well, but also for the doctor visits and so many other resources that we have here to set them up with SNAP, and WIC and also housing and insurance and things like that,” said Colin Pugh, a pastor at Clinton Baptist Church.
This type of help is needed now more than ever because Black and Hispanic mothers face persistent health disparities when it comes to prenatal care compared to White and Asian residents, according to the 2025 Community Health Assessment for Prince George’s County.
And among the Black community, the number of infant deaths has significantly gone up in the last few years, according to the same study focused on Prince Georges County.
But the event is about so much more than a single day as it aims to provide a foundation to support children and families in Prince Georges County.
