The City of Philadelphia will install permanent monuments of three Black trailblazers, according to Mayor Cherelle Parker.

During the Celebration of Freedom ceremony on July 4, Parker announced that the city will install permanent monuments honoring Harriet Tubman, Sadie T. M. Alexander and Blanche A. Nixon.

“The first permanent statues in Philadelphia dedicated to Black women leaders. This is our Philadelphia, and this is our America,” Parker said.

Chief Cultural Officer Val Gay said the first statue to be installed will be of Blanche Nixon at the Cobbs Creek Library. It will be unveiled later this year.

“A homegrown hero that the community said they wanted to honor her with a statue, which is beautiful,” Gay said.

Harriet Tubman’s statue will come in the spring of 2027 at the north apron of City Hall.

Sadie T. M. Alexander’s monument will be installed on the Municipal Services Building in late spring, early summer, according to Gay.
