South Africa: Ramaphosa’s Coalition Govt Divided Over Law That Irked Trump | Firstpost Africa

Watch this video as Firstpost explains how Ramaphosa’s coalition government is divided over a land law that irked Donald Trump. South Africa’s coalition government faces its toughest test as the Democratic Alliance takes the controversial Expropriation Act to the High Court. Signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the legislation allows land expropriation without compensation under specific conditions to redress historical apartheid-era inequalities. However, the pro-business DA argues the law violates the constitution, threatens private property rights, and risks damaging investor confidence. The dispute has also triggered severe international strain, drawing sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump, who accused Pretoria of targeting white farmers, froze financial aid, and imposed fresh tariffs. While the ruling ANC maintains that the law is essential for long-term equity, business leaders warn that uncertainty over property rights could scare off global capital. As this high-stakes court battle unfolds, the ruling could reshape South Africa’s property landscape, economic future, and international alliances. Alyson Le Grange brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
