Discover the story behind Ethiopia’s monumental energy project — the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Standing 145 metres tall and spanning nearly 2 kilometres, GERD is set to be Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam and a symbol of national pride. Funded entirely by Ethiopia without foreign aid, this $5 billion project promises to transform the country’s energy landscape. But the story doesn’t end there. GERD sits on the Blue Nile, a vital tributary to the Nile River, which flows downstream into the Sudan and Egypt. The dam has sparked regional tensions rooted in colonial-era water agreements. What does GERD mean for the future of Nile water sharing and regional peace?

Anything signed in colonial times should not be respected this will ultimately end up becoming a reason to blow it up

Congrats to Ethiopia. Meanwhile my country the DRC is still talking a lot for decades about the Grand Inga dam that would be the greatest hydroelectric plant in Africa. But there is only talk, talk, talk and people filling their pockets with commissions from possible constructors. Ethiopia has built its dam on its own without foreign loans. God bless Ethiopia.
Ethiopia 🇪🇹 just one way to control Egypt 🇪🇬 😅😂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I will fright😮😮😮😮😮😮
Yes they can control the waterfowl so you get less during floods and more during droughts! That is a good thing means now you have morewater when you need and less when you dont!!
They have done an amazing job.

Qatar is a desert without any flowing waters yet water have never ran out 24/7. Egyptian should dig up the boreholes and stop being petty

God please Ethiopia. Egypt is absolutely mad
Keep on doing the good work Ethiopia, Egyptians always have a sense of entitlement when it comes to the Nile, forgetting they are at the tail. Congratulations to Ethiopia 🇪🇹, God's willing we must eventually build our own also. Sending love from Juba, South Sudan 🇸🇸.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) represents a major step toward clean energy for the region, offering a renewable alternative that reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Ethiopia people would like open to cooperating with Egypt and Sudan by providing electricity, helping both countries move toward a future with less fossil fuel consumption. Additionally, with the dam now filled, the Blue Nile’s flow can be more carefully regulated, reducing the risk of flooding and providing a stable, predictable water supply for Egypt and Sudan. The hardest part is over, and from now on, it’s about managing a steady flow.
Ethiopia deeply values its bond with Egypt and Sudan, approaches this with genuine compassion. They understand the pain of water scarcity and have no intention of causing harm. In the spirit of mutual respect and shared prosperity, both countries can look forward to a future of cooperation and friendship. Ethiopian were very proud of the ancient Nubian civilization of Egypts existence there’s nothing we wish except happiness, prosperity in peace.
Wow great explanation.
Dam must say open for Egypt Naile stay open water for Egypt and Sudan
Ethiopia Dictator Bixigina Must stay open water Naile for Egipit government and Sudan
Yes, Egypt should take all the nile waters that pass there , Sudan the same, and Ethiopia should also use all the water in its borders.
I find it deeply troubling that in the 21st century, a monumental achievement like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is framed by international media as a source of “tension.” For decades, Ethiopia was portrayed as the face of famine and drought—images that dominated headlines and shaped global perceptions. Now, as we rise from that legacy and invest in transformative infrastructure to lift millions out of energy poverty, the narrative shifts to fear and controversy.
This is not just a dam—it is a symbol of resilience, sovereignty, and progress. It represents Ethiopia’s journey from darkness to light. To reduce such a milestone to a geopolitical dispute is not only misleading, but a disservice to the truth and to the dignity of African development.
Media outlets must reflect on their role: are you illuminating progress or perpetuating outdated narratives? Egypt’s objections, rooted in colonial-era entitlements, should not overshadow Ethiopia’s natural right to equitably utilize its own resources. The Nile begins in Ethiopia. So does the light.
Shame on the professionalism that chooses sensationalism over substance. The title should have read: “From Darkness to Light—Africa’s New Era Begins.”
Egypt just wants to keep other African nations poor. More Power to Ethopia. And a Islamist Sudan who are k*lling there non muslim population for more than 2 decades they can keep crying about it. Rather than investing in Infra, Sudan militarized and slaughtered non muslims in the name of jihad.
I have been to Ethiopia and I feel this country is doing a lot to develop themselves. They are also using their resources in the best way. Look at their airlines, which is the lifeline for entire Africa. I have a feeling that they will use this dam without harming Egypt.
As usual, Britain is at the centre of it! They drew treaties without even informing the custodians of the river! Egypt was being hoodwinked into signing a worthless treaty, they probably paid the negotiators with some gold and other valuables, "for a job well-done!" They all forgot, they have no power over a river that didn't originate within their borders! Britain signing a treaty with Egypt and Sudan! What a joke of a treaty! Somebody should've told Egypt that they were better served to sign treaties with countries where that river originates from and passes through! Rather, they went to Britain! And now they are running to Donald Trump, of all people!!😂😂😂😂
It’s so funny how every channel funded by Egypt headlines Ethiopia’s dam as controversial or associate it with tension. Shame on all of you and your time is up.
This is our Dam built by blood and bones of Ethiopian that serves as a foundation for our development
